His mother, Doveberry- a she-cat of Pigeonclan origin gave birth to two kits- Hailkit and his sister, Milkkit, though the young she-kit never took her first breath as she was stillborn to the dismay of her mother. The she-cat had already lost her mate as a result of illness and was devastated to lose yet another who was so dear to her. Hailkit was never truly aware that he even had a sister as she had been removed before he even opened his eyes, though his mother told him about her before he reached the age of apprenticeship. She seemed upset but Hailkit couldn't return the sadness, he had never even seen the she-kit so her death was easily pushed away, though he did feel rather lonely at times being an only kit.

Hailkit was named Hailpaw and got Fawnwhisper as a mentor. After exploring the territory for the first time the she-cat mentioned to him that she would be teaching him some defensive moves, though he quickly suggested that he would rather learn to hunt first, scared that he would accidentally hurt his mentor.
Despite his mentor's expectations the tom excelled at hunting, catching a mouse within his first lesson to his own delight. Everything seemed to come naturally to him when he was hunting; he was decent at picking up fighting skills, too, though his fear of hurting someone put them to a halt.
After long moons of training his ability to fight finally caught up with his almost-expert hunting skills, though they never did completely as he was still hesitant about fighting anyone. His mentor, Fawnwhisper was chosen to be one of the deputies of Ratclan after the death of the former and was incredibly happy for her, wondering if he ever wanted to be in her place one day.
